INPAC-Seminar 147

Title: Magnetic Moments – Recent Contributions to Nuclear Structure Understanding

Speaker: Dr.Nick Stone (Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA & University of Tennessee, USA)

Location: Lecture Hall/INPAC

Time: 14:00-15:00, Tuesday, May 6, 2014

Abstract:
Nuclear magnetic dipole moments are sensitive tests of both single particle and collective aspects of nuclear state wave functions. Starting from first principles, this talk will describe recent work in which measurements of the nuclear magnetic dipole moment has caste useful light on:
The behavior of nucleons in nuclei – single particles outside closed subshells,
The variation of ‘single particle’ ground states in transition between close subshells,
The make-up of ‘collective’ 2+ excitations near subshell closure,
Pairing, blocking and nuclear superfluidity in high-K isomers.
