Abstract:

Human and animal behaviors are generated by the activity of interconnected neurons. In recent years we have witnessed dramatic advance in techniques of precisely dissecting the functions of neural circuits. Here I will present a few examples from my research group that we used optogenetic and pharmacogenetic approaches to activate or ablate specific subsets of neurons. Physiological and behavioral assays are then performed to reveal some surprising features and functions of these neurons.
